Laptop Buying Guide

LAPTOP PRICE AND BUDGET

Laptops are available in a range of prices. Also, most of the companies have tie-ups with banks for loans.Make sure you check for insurance covers and warranty when you buy your machine.Opt for an on-site warranty(service engineers come home and service the laptop) instead of a carry-in warranty(one needs to carry one's laptop to the servicing center). To avoid paying a lot for repairs after the warranty period is over buy annual maintenance contracts(AMCs)

LAPTOP FEATURES

Weight

Avoid buying bulky laptops that are difficult to carry around. But the lighter the laptop, the higher the price.

Speed

Opt for one that has a speed of at least 1.7GHz.

Processors

For office computing or word-processing softwares, a Celeron processor is sufficient. But if you want to download movies or music and play games, opt for Intel's Core Duo or Pentium Processors.

Operating systems

Most models can be run on a Microsoft Windows OS.But consult a representative of the company that manufactures the laptop you want to buy to check whether others, such as Linux would suit you better. And if buy and Apple, it will come with an exclusive Apple OS.

Hard drive disk capacity

This is the space to store and process data.If you want to use it for office computing and word processing, a 40 GB capacity should suffice. But bigger is always better when you want to use applications such as image processing softwares(CorelDraw,Photoshop), download music or play games. Most importantly, remember that increasing this capacity later is nearly impossible.

Random Access Memory(RAM)

This holds the program that your computer is currently running.A 512 MB RAM should suffice unless you want to use image processing softwares or put it to professional use 24/7.In that case opt for ones with 1-2 GB RAM.

Screen size

The most popular screen size in the lower end latops is the 12 inch display.Larger screens make surfing the Internet and watching movies easier, and they are not necessarily more expensive. So if you want to make presentations on the go, get at least a 14 inch screen. Also, consider aspects such as luminosity, daylight brightness, aspect ratio (ratio of length to breadth of the screen).

Battery

They are of 2 types: lithium ion(Li-ion) or lithium polymer(Li-polymer).The latter are smaller, have a longer life and are usually more expensive. They can power the latop for as long as eight hours, whereas a Li-ion battery can power it for 2-3 hours. Also, with normal use, expect about half the battery life claimed by the manufacturer.

CD/DVD drive

Most laptops have built in CD/DVD drives(readers). And if you think you will need it, get a CD/DVD writer too.

Connectivity

If you are comfortable with gadgets, go for a wireless fidelity(Wi-Fi) and Bluetooth-enabled laptop.Wi-Fi allows one to connect to Internet when in proximity of a wireless access point(which is part of a network).Bluetooth helps connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, printers and digital cameras.
